BULLOCK’S BARBECUE 3330 QUEBEC DRIVE

You can’t have a southern city without a go-to barbecue restaurant. For over sixty years, Bullock’s has served barbecue to the people of Durham. The restaurant can trace its beginning’s back to Glen Bullock’s backyard on South Alston Avenue. There, in the 1940s, he began cooking pigs and selling barbecue to his friends and neighbors (reportedly for thirty-five cents per pound). The demand for his barbecue eventually grew, so in 1952, he rented a building at 3601 Hillsborough Road in order to open a true restaurant. Glen’s wife, Lillian, and his son, Tommy, helped run the business, and Tommy took it over in 1965. In 1970, the restaurant was still booming, so the Bullocks built a new building on land they owned and moved just over half a mile to the east.

Over the years, no visit to Durham was complete without a meal at Bullock’s. Many celebrities even stopped by, and the restaurant’s walls were soon filled with autographed photos of athletes, musicians and actors who had enjoyed the barbecue, Brunswick stew, fried chicken, slaw, beans, hushpuppies, collard greens and the wide range of desserts offered there.
